Germany, 1900. The Second Reich, led by the bellicose Kaiser Wilhelm, is hard at work preparing the country to fight a “good war.” The first step? Create a propaganda campaign that convinces the German population of its “rightful place under the sun.” German Foreign Secretary Bernhard von Bulow sets the campaign in motion by enlisting Dr. Albert Scheler of the Weimar Sanatorium to revise the physical and psychological profile on the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. The Reich intends on using Nietzsche’s ideas of the Superman and the "will to power" to bolster its case for war and needs the philosopher’s image to be sanitized for the public. But Scheler quickly makes an unsettling discovery: Nietzsche is not a good fit for the Reich’s campaign. In fact, he’s an ardent foe of Germany. Scheler thus faces a moral dilemma: tell the truth and risk the Reich’s funding of the Sanatorium and jeopardize his own promising career. Or compromise his own ethical standards and present Nietzsche as the government would wish. Narasi novel ini sangat lancar, dengan acapkali diselingi kata-kata sarkas yang tentu saja, tujuan penulis menghadirkan kata-kata tersebut, semata untuk mendukung karakter tokoh-tokohnya. Sumpah serapah jika ingin dirasakan sebagai benar-benar sumpah serapah, harus dilontarkan dengan penuh emosi, meski emosi tidak harus melulu disajikan dengan teriak-teriak. Dan hikmat tidak hanya berada di sebuah kisah yang baik-baik saja. Dari kisah yang paling kelam sekali pun, hikmat tetap dapat dihadirkan, seperti halnya kisah dalam novel ini. Bagaimanakah rasanya menjalani hidup sejak lahir di ruangan yang sempit, gelap, lembap, bacin, dan menyedihkan? Mungkin saja menakutkan, mengenaskan, atau memilukan. Namun, semua itu kemungkinan hanya bisa dipahami betul oleh orang yang sebelumnya mengetahui ruang hidup yang lebih baik, lebih bebas, lebih indah. Bagaimana halnya apabila kita hidup di ruangan semacam itu sejak awal mula dilahirkan? Tentulah kita tak memiliki pembanding antara ruang hidup yang menyenangkan dan tidak menyenangkan. Apalagi apabila kita dilahirkan dengan keadaan yang tidak lengkap-setidaknya menurut parameter manusia pada umumnya-tak memiliki penglihatan, tak memiliki pendengaran, dan tak bisa berbicara. Katakanlah, kita dilahirkan di ruangan sempit itu, ruangan yang tidak menyenangkan itu, dalam keadaan buta, tuli, dan bisu. Kiranya apa yang akan kita pikirkan? Akankah kita tetap bisa melihat? Akankah kita tetap bisa mendengar? Akankah kita tetap bisa berbicara? Semua itu mungkin saja.
