In 1995, Subhadra ran from her own wedding in a torn red sari and landed in Puri with earrings and a lifetime of guilt. Crying on the cold steps of Jagannath Temple, she met Gopal a boy with feather-like curls and amber eyes who said he had been here for a very, very long time. He never told her who he was. He just taught her how to live again.

She was life. He counted her death 18,206 times. At Manikarnika, where the dead find release, one girl named Life came to die. The boy who found her was not a boy. He had bandaged heroes at Kurukshetra. He had torn his own garment for Draupadi. For her, he tore himself. She called him Madho. He called her Jeevika. Neither name was enough to save her. So he followed her. Universe after universe. Death after death. Until there were no more universes left. Immortality is watching the same soul die 18,206 times.
