Sixteen-year-old Claire Railstone is an Earthling living with the natives, and, thanks to the portal, is forever stuck with people who resent her entire race. However, there is someone out there, who is willing to kidnap, steal, and kill to possess the infinite power of the portal. Despite centuries-old prejudices, Xuhgea's only hope may rest with Claire and Jessica. But it might already be too late.

Humans were supposed to be cowards. The Galactic Federation's species registry had them listed as a 2 of 16 on the aggression index. Our interactions with the Terran Union up until this point supported those conclusions. They had not fought any wars among themselves in centuries, and had formed a unified world government prior to achieving FTL travel.
