For the Open Novella Contest, based on Prompt 65: On the way to collect a soul, the Grim Reaper is distracted by a stray puppy. Instead of completing the task, he decides to find the puppy's owner, much to the frustration of his assistant. ***** The Grim Reaper has seen everything, really. From the beginning of humans living in caves, all the way to modern-day humanity. These days, he's mostly a figurehead, going through a handful of cases a week that no other reaper wants. While floating through the mortal world, unseen by anyone, he comes across a dog that seems to be able to see him. Despite his over-achieving assistant begging him to return to his duties, Grim decides to seek out the puppy's owner, and in doing so meets Jeremiah. Miah is an accountant who loves numbers but hates the monotonous tone his life is taking. The rescuer of Miss Trixie, his dog, is an unusual but interesting man that he decides to strike up a friendship with... although is it just him, or is Grim a bizarre name for a person?

Elliot Spellman wanted to live; he wanted to feel the rush everyone else did. He was tired of being just some kid in the back of the class who went home every night to study in his bedroom. That was how he found himself in an alley, dealing marijuana. He wanted this, he needed this. Not marijuana, but friends, a group, the thrill. Beatle, Mi, Trick, and Whiskey all agree that he can join them in their unlawful behavior (despite how boring his name is). And they all slowly bond, except Elliot seems to bond with Beatle more than the others. Maybe, a little too much. -- There is a second book in this universe with Whiskey as the main character it is called Asymptote --

"The world was a different place, now that he was dead. The love of my life, gone forever. In my dreams, I would see him on the verge of those chalky white cliffs, and he would look at me, before stepping over the edge. He killed himself, and left me with nothing. So that was what I became. Nothing." (2nd book in the FM Trilogy)

"It was eerie even thinking about him after that day, knowing that it was all my fault that he was gone, that I'd lost him forever. Never again would I look into those beautiful blue eyes, or wake up beside him. I'd never have breakfast with him again, I'd never do anything with him again, because he was dead, and it was all my fault. I killed him." (1st book in the FM Trilogy)
