The doctors give the powers, but no one knows where the soulmate assignment comes from. To get to know you're soulmate, anything written on your skin comes through onto their skin. Along with tattoos that show up every time your soulmate finds something they love and that describes them. At the beginning of every summer, all the schools send them to an arena to fight monsters, to evolve, practice, and show off. At the end of your senior year, managers watch and take their pick. Aside from fighting the bad guys' army, Percy and Nico also have to deal with nosy campers *cough* Annabeth *cough* trying to look under their hoods, stalking them, and generally not minding their own business. It's complicated. Just like everything related to demigods.
