The one where Thomas loves books and Newt needs hope

Newt is assigned to tutor Thomas in math and they soon become very close. Newt is a year older than Thomas and is quite nerdy and reserved. Thomas meanwhile, is very curious and instantly wants to get to know the blonde better; he is also on the track team.

Thomas watches as his chest rises and falls with every breath, wills his own breathing to regulate itself. The world begins to tilt in a way that is both pleasant and a little dangerous, the two of them right there in the center of it. "I still have your clothes." Newt peeks out at Thomas from underneath his sleeve, eyes slitted under the light. "Bloody hell, is this what we're thinking about right now?" Thomas laughs, a reserved sort of exhalation, as he turns to look at him. Newt brings his arm back to his side; an invitation. Then, "I still have yours, too."

Newt has a snobby, rich family that never leaves him alone about his love life. It's not that he doesn't have one- oh he does. His family is just full of homophobic assholes, aside from his lovely mother, of course. The idea of being bothered by his family because of his lack of a love life drives him to lie about having a girlfriend. Who else's better to play the part than Teresa?

Newt had heard the stories, knew them like the back of his hand: everybody has a soulmate in this world, one person made just for them, blah, blah, blah. Their initials were inscribed on everybody's chest, just to the left of the sternum, directly over the heart. That he was fine with. The problem for him, personally, lay within the other condition: that if you came within close proximity of your soulmate, but failed to meet them, you would have to relive the day until you succeeded. Which, in theory, seems like a good idea, but that's because most people didn't fuck up this badly.

"I take back every nice thing I ever said to you," I said. My head fell to the table with a thud. "Sorry, I have a no-return policy," Newt replied. "All of your sweet-nothing's have already been stored in the bank." "I'll burn the bank down." The table muffled my words. "I'll sue you for more sweet-nothings." I rolled my eyes, too tired to reply. Newt leaned back in his seat and took a sip of his chocolate milk. We were quiet for a moment until he spoke up again. "You'll be hearing from my lawyer," he muttered coyly with a smile. // Newt Lahey is known for his absolutely horrible luck. It's a curious thing, because he's also the friendliest, most patient, kind kid in the senior class. Everyone knows he's happy, even if they can't understand why under his circumstances. Thomas Freehold used to be popular. He took a major fall when he cheated on his girlfriend, the most popular girl in the grade. Now, as most of the grade turns their back on him in disgust, he finds that there's really only one person who seems to forgive him for his mistakes, accept him for his faults. It sucks that that person is Newt Lahey, but Thomas isn't really in a position to be too greedy anymore. It's an odd friendship, blooming from odd circumstances. But somehow, miraculously, it works. As the two grow closer, in friendship and in love, Thomas learns a very important lesson: Not everything is as it seems. Newt, of course, is the prime example of that.

who knew music could hold two broken people together?
