Severus Snape goes through an early (and very painful) creature inheritance, and has trouble finding his mate, or rather, coming to terms with who his mate is. James Potter is having the same trouble with his inheritance.

In med school, he was taught to never give up. No patient is so far gone you can just throw your arms in the air and walk away. No one deserves your half assed treatment, everyone deserves your absolute best. And if there was an absolute best, it would be Severus Snape. But he holds his breath every day. Wondering if this is it, if this is all he is meant for. A genius surgeon wasting away in an OR with no life waiting for him back home.
