A Merthur fic set in canon era. After two years of putting up with his useless excuse for a manservant, Arthur begins to suspect that there may be more to Merlin than meets the eye. But Merlin's not the only one with a secret. And maybe destinies aren't always as they seem. AU where I use elements of all five seasons in a way that does not always comply with canon. After Freya's death Merlin thinks he'll never find love again. But he couldn't be more wrong. As Arthur tries to cheer up his manservant they both discover something. Something that can't happen between them, not with Uther as king. Will their love be more powerful than the fear they feel? "We look each other in the eyes. I could drown in his blue eyes. I'm getting closer. My heart is racing. I feel warm. My eyes drops to his lips. I need to kiss him. I feel my stomach upside down. He's coming closer too. We're two inches distant. In an AU LGBTQ+ accepting Camelot, anybody can love anybody. King Arthur throws a Ball to try and find a romantic companion among his kingdom to make his Queen or King Consort. His manservant Merlin is overrun with chores, but finds a way to attend, though he's too embarrassed to go as himself. In disguise he sets a fire in Arthur's heart, who must discover the identity of the mysterious masked man. (I do not own the characters or the photo used for the cover)

The king feels no guilt when he enters the couple's home, killing both Balinor and Hunith as they try desperately to protect their son. But, instead of having the child meet the same fate Uther decides to keep the young dragonlord as a form of token. A spoil of war. So, once he returns he locks the boy away somewhere deep in Camelot's dungeons. Merlin remains there for years, alone and afraid until one day a young prince finds him.
