You don't thank people for loving you," he whispered before he could stop himself. Her breath stopped. Doug froze. Logan's head snapped up from across the room. Doug swallowed. "I didn't mean- I just-" he stammered softly, staring at the floor. She lifted her head. Her eyes met his. Warm. Fragile. Brave. "Say it again," she whispered. Doug's breath hitched. "I shouldn't have said that," he murmured. "Doug." He finally looked at her. She reached up, fingers lightly brushing his jaw. His breath stuttered visibly. "Say it again," she asked softly. He inhaled slowly. Then, in a voice barely above a whisper: "...I love you." Her eyes filled, lips trembling. "Doug..." He shook his head quickly. "You don't have to say it back. I'm not asking- I just- I needed you to know before things get worse." She cupped his cheek with her palm. "You've been the only safe place I've had," she whispered. "Of course I love you."
