Waverly Rhodes arrived at Basgiath War College with a dead girl's name, enough daggers to supply a whole riot, and an agenda. Her plan, like most things in her life, took a turn for the worse.
She didn't account for a unique threshing. She didn't account for Rome Zaher, who studies her like she's the problem, and who's seen her at her worst and filed it away without a word. She didn't account for Xaden Riorson, who has no reason to know she exists and knows anyway, pulled by something neither of them has language for yet.
Waverly certainly didn't account for both of them.
At 20, Rhodes has survived more than most will in a lifetime. Her mother. A venin attack. A commander who had a special way of taking care of loose ends. The sparring rings of Calldyr City. She has burned through worse than a war college and two men who can't decide whether they want to argue with her or... well.
The dragons have already decided. The riders are taking longer.
Between classes that could kill her, a squad she didn't plan on caring about, and new knowledge about her mother that's beginning to confuse, not clarify. Waverly Rhodes is running out of room to keep everyone at arm's length.
Especially the ones who stopped being fooled by her somewhere around day one.
Some bonds aren't chosen.
Some fires can't be controlled.
Some secrets don't stay buried.
