[Warning: contains homophobia and abuse. Read at your own discretion.] Basketball, that's all Kate cares about. Well, that and trying her best to stay inside the closet, at least in front of her parents. If only it had worked for a few more years... An argument and accidental coming out later, her parents had dropped her off at an orphanage. Now here she was, 16, alone with a bunch of kids and no basketball. Of course, the last one is her biggest concern. Her salvation: a wealthy family wanting to adopt her. A new school with a girls' basketball team. The only downside? There's my life before twelve. And then there's everything after. Mila was twelve years old when the world shifted beneath her feet. She was twelve when she lost her parents, when Aunt Lucy took her in without hesitation, and when she first met Lena her best friend Nora's older sister, seventeen and beautiful and utterly impossible to look away from. One smile in a hallway, and something in Mila's chest clicked into place. She didn't know what it was then. She just knew she wanted Lena to look at her like that again. Now Mila is almost eighteen. Lena has spent three years abroad studying medicine and is finally coming home. And Mila is standing in front of her mirror, trying to convince herself that she's not still that twelve-year-old girl staring at a seventeen-year-old like she just discovered gravity. But the heart doesn't forget. And some things some people only grow more complicated with time. AUTHOR'S NOTE This story has been rewritten from an earlier version that I wasn't satisfied with. CONTENT NOTES This story contains themes and scenes that may be sensitive for some readers: Parental loss (off-page). Grief and trauma recovery. Medical scenes including cardiac episode and hospitalization. Panic attacks and anxiety. Self-destructive coping. Four-year age gap (17/21, slow-burn, fully consensual). Mild alcohol use. Smut

Alexandra Williams: The textbook popular jock who is too loud in the hallways and too attractive for her own good. Classmates love her, parents adore her, and even babies can't seem to resist her charm. She's got the grades, the game, and a grin that can get her out of anything. With that hand of cards, there's no need to say that some of it has gone to her head. Kristen Adams: The new girl. Fresh out of LA and dropped into the heart of Minnesota, hoping to outrun the past she left behind. Shy in the new environment, she was scared she would never fit in. But little did she know, she had caught the attention of everyone. Thrown together by their sports, they collide like two masses pulled into orbit. They spin closer, faster, until it feels inevitable. Until gravity turns violent and they explode. Forcing both of them to learn that the hardest part isn't the fall, but learning how to land. Content Warning: Domestic Abuse Though depictions of abuse within this book are minimal, they are present and may be distressing to some readers. Please take its presence into consideration before reading.

Sometimes we're not even fully aware of how similar hate and love really are. How closely they sit together, how thin the line is between them. One wrong word, one wrong choice, one moment of fear or anger, and you cross it without even realizing you've done so. That's how it had alwags been with Casey Miller and Olivia Lordan. They didn't hate each other for no reason. There were reasons, plenty of them, actually. Old wounds that never healed right, memories that calcified instead of fading, words spoken too young and carried for too long. But were those reasons valid enough? That was the question no one ever asked out loud. Because validity is subjective. Pain doesn't measure itself against intent. Trauma doesn't care how old you were, or what you meant to do. It just exists, heavy and unrelenting, shaping you whether you want it to or not. Everyone has flaws. Everyone has demons they fight in private. Some people turn inward and rot quietly. Some people explode. Some people run. Some people stay and harden. None of it is clean, and none of it is fair. And maybe that was the cruelest part for them. Not the hate. Not the anger. Not even the silence. But the fact that, once upon a time, it had been love, or something dangerously close to it, and that was what made everything else hurt so much more.
