**PREVIEW(CH. 17)** I finally made it to the checkout lane, placing the eclectic collection on the counter. The clerk raised an eyebrow at the overflow on her counter, trying to keep a friendly smile on. "Find everything, ohhh-kayyy... today?" She asked in an almost even tone, eyes avoiding looking up past my hips as she scanned the third box of Throat Coat in a row. God, I do not feel like havin' small talk about this. ...Or witnesses. "Yeah. Just..." I nodded, my gaze sweeping the front of the store as I dig into my back pocket for my wallet. "Do you have any roses left?" The clerk shook her head quickly, scanning some peach rings and bruise cream. "No sir, we don't get a new shipment 'til Tuesday. That's all we got." She pointed a tattooed finger toward a small stand near the exit. I looked at the sad little flowers anyway, most were half-crushed, wilting away. But two vibrant sunflowers stuck out from the middle like they didn't know they weren't supposed to be here and way too stubborn to die. She'd probably like them though. Or beat me with them. "These'll do then, ma'am." I murmured, dropping the flowers onto the counter next to the boxes of Skyns and Pedialyte. "For the lady?" She asked, finally awake enough to tease. "No, for me. Like havin' 'em go upside my head." The girl lips just twitched, but didn't say anything, just swiped my card, trying not to look at me anymore than necessary.

𝗜'𝘃𝗲 𝗸𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀, 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗲. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱. 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂. 𝘽𝙞𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙚 𝙄𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙘'𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙤𝙛𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙨. With her thirtieth birthday looming, no romantic prospects, and a dream of motherhood slipping away, she's down to one last, desperate option: a decade-old pact made with her estranged childhood friend, Silas Beckett. The problem? Silas is now a superstar baseball player with a playboy reputation, and their friendship is a distant memory. Still, he agrees to their clinical, business-like plan: have a baby through fertility treatments, co-parent as best friends, and keep their hearts strictly out of the equation. But through sterile waiting rooms and late-night hormone shots, the old intimacy that once defined them rekindles into something deeper and far more dangerous. As the line between platonic and passionate blurs, their carefully constructed plan begins to fail in more ways than one. When they're left with nothing but failed treatments and inconvenient feelings, they have to face the fact that what they really want might not be a baby, but each other. But is a love born from a broken contract enough to build a new dream on?

I dragged my nails lightly over his chest, slow, my eyes locked on his. "You told me I was in control, remember?" My voice dipped lower, sultry, daring. I leaned close enough that my lips brushed his ear. "Then say it, baby. Say you're my bitch." A dark laugh rumbled from his lips, low and sinful, the kind that made my stomach flip. His eyes didn't waver, didn't blink. "I'm your bitch," he said...calm, but hot as fuck. The words rolled off his tongue like he'd been waiting to say them, and God, the way he said it almost made me melt right there.
