On the way home from Italy Alice tells her some important news that shocks Bella to her core.

In the divorce, Charlie is granted full custody of Bella's younger sister. Alessandra, or Allie, grows up in Forks, knowing nothing but her small town life, but she doesn't care. She loves it here, that is until Bella comes home. When Bella moves home so that Renee and Phil can travel, things get thrown upside down, and Allie is quick to place all the blame on her sister that hates her.
