In a breath, he had bloodied Legolas and infuriated Thranduil. In a breath, he knew pride and hatred. In a breath, Thorin Oakenshield knew an elf would walk beside him, that he would face Smaug with the most unlikely of friends, and perhaps not walk from Erebor with the Arkenstone in his hands. In a breath, he knew dragonfire. Her family gave shelter to a band of weary travelers. A meal by the fire, a kindness freely given - nothing more. But five years later, Thorin Oakenshield remembers. With Erebor reclaimed and his crown secure, the King Under the Mountain seeks to repay a debt long left unsettled. Yet when he returns to the farmstead, he finds not a warm hearth but ruin - and the woman who once caught his eye standing alone among the ashes of her family's sacrifice. What begins as honor quickly becomes something deeper: laughter breaking through grief, quarrels sparking into kisses, and two stubborn souls learning to fight not against one another, but for each other. As shadows stir once more and Erebor itself calls him home, Thorin must decide if love can be more enduring than stone - and if he dares to claim not just a kingdom, but the heart that has been his all along. A tale of memory, fire, and fate - where debts are paid not in gold, but in love and when love blooms promise is kept.

When accounting graduate Nikki gets lost in the Kruger National Park, the last thing she expects is to be rescued by an Elvenking from another time. Pulled through a mysterious shimmer between eras, she finds herself in Middle-earth with Thranduil, where healing is slow, devotion is patient and love unfolds across centuries. A tale of two timelines, patient devotion and finding home in the most unexpected places. Author's Note: This story contains foreign words (including Afrikaans, South African terms and Tolkien-related languages) - a glossary is included at the end of each chapter. Some scenes, including Nikki's encounter with the jackal, are inspired by the Afrikaans children's book "Bienkie in die Bosveld" by Ettie Bierman; names and details have been changed. This story makes use of characters, places and events created by JRR Tolkien. It is a non-commercial, transformative fanfiction work, written as a creative exploration and crossover. No profit is being made and all rights remain with the original copyright holders. In this story, the Peter Jackson films and widespread pop culture adaptations do not exist; any references to Tolkien's books are treated as in-universe knowledge.

The Elvenking is like a very strong, old tree, deeply rooted in the kingdom he pledged himself to protect. He also pledged himself to protect his heart from love, out of fear that it might weaken him, but that proved to be disastrous. Love... what daunting word rubbed in his face by that fearless redhead elleth during the battle in Dale. Is there any love left in him? Follows what happens with Thranduil and Tauriel after BOTFA, during the War of the Ring and further into the 4th Age. Mainly from Thranduil's POV and including canon events that are only briefly mentioned in the books. I try to respect the lore as much as I can. Apart from the romance, I wanted to explore Thranduil's character based on what we know about his life. Feedback and comments are much appreciated :) "His words were unforgiving again, hiding under the same cold tone he had for centuries, yet he could not believe them himself anymore. Tauriel was looking at him, her gaze seemingly piercing through his soul. His dream to restore Mirkwood to Greenwood and his thoughts of avenging his beloved wife were contradicting everything he said. He did not want to care yet every fibre of his being cared too much." "There was something else that Thranduil noticed in Celeborn's eyes: a combination of respect and admiration. 'You are strong, Thranduil. You are like one of the old Mirkwood trees, deeply rooted in the earth, that the centuries cannot wither. I always thought that, no matter what evil lies upon Arda, you will endure.'
