Tommy had gotten away from Dream in the canon universe, but in another Tommy was caught and turned into a living punching bag and, kinda, an experiment for Dream later on. He didn't expect Tommy to lose his emotions, the nervous system that told him when he was in pain, and even the will to carry on without Dream by his side. He didn't think that killing and reviving Tommy would affect him so much, but then again Dream wasn't complaining in the slightest.
