The art of creating a Shield Contact, also known as an ancient form of black magic, is the written agreement between two people, where one pledges to become the protector of the other for life. The protectors, known as Shields, must attend to the every whim of their contracted master, known as a Wielder, and on rare occasions, even give their life to save that of their Wielder. Shields are highly frowned upon by many, seen as a lower class of person, though only the rich are able to afford the price that comes with making a Contract. Bound by their Contracts and physically unable to harm their Wielders, Shields are forced to do as they’re told without so much as a complaint. Lucas Evernight, Shield of the famous Lightenhart family’s daughter, doesn’t agree with the way his fellow Shields are treated and despises the fact that the Evernights have been Contracted as Shields for the Lightenhart family for generations.
