Serena Arevalo was a 19-year-old girl, the only daughter of Governor Emilio Arevalo and First Lady Carmela Arevalo of Masbate City, Bicol Region. Known to everyone simply as Rena, she grew up wanting for nothing-spoiled, privileged, and taught from a young age that her family's status set her apart. She looked down on the poor, believing them to be dirty, uneducated, and beneath her; she never questioned her father's reputation as a "champion of the people," nor wondered where all the wealth and comfort came from.
Everything changed when she met Gabriel "Gabo" Sarmiento-a 25-year-old man born to a simple farmer and a market vendor. Far from being privileged, Gabo worked his way through school to become a human rights lawyer and investigative journalist, and now leads the citizens' watchdog group Kaban ng Bayan. He has spent years exposing corruption, fighting for justice for the marginalized, and making no secret of his hatred for politicians like Governor Arevalo-whom he suspects of stealing public funds and neglecting the very people he swore to serve.
At first, Rena and Gabo clash fiercely, she sees him as a troublemaker stirring up unrest, while he sees her as a sheltered, entitled child blind to her own father's crimes. But as their paths keep crossing, Rena begins to see the truth behind the grand speeches and fancy events. She witnesses the suffering of ordinary Masbateños, reads the evidence Gabo uncovers, and slowly realizes that everything she was taught might be a lie.
Caught between the family that raised her and the man who opens her eyes to reality, Rena must choose, will she remain the loyal daughter of a corrupt leader, or dare to stand for the truth-even if it means losing everything she has ever known?
