Like clockwork, he hears it. Every night. The screaming. The banging. The crying. Then, the door slams, and he feels like he's witnessed a murder and just sat there and watched. He doesn't know her name; she won't tell it to him. He barely knows what she looks like, only the sliver of her face that pokes out of her door when he knocks. But he's enamored with her. The mystery that she carries, even if he knows it will only hurt him.

My chest tightens in the best way. I look at him again. Really look at him. And it just comes out.
"I love you."
The words settle between us. Quiet. Real. I freeze for half a second after saying it. Not because I regret it. But because I realize what I just said. I'm waiting for fear. For panic. For that instinct to pull back. But it doesn't come. Instead, I feel calm. Sure. Like it was always there, just waiting for me to say it out loud.
Bucky doesn't speak right away. He just looks at me. And for a split second, I wonder if I-
"I love you too."
