[Wattys 2023 Grand Prize Winner] After an eight-hour flight sitting next to her high school nemesis Jackson Carter, fashion designer and barista Isabelle Curtis thought that would finally be the last she would see of him. But as the saying goes, famous last words. * * * Isabelle Curtis and Jackson Carter were fierce academic rivals in high school, up until Jackson moved to the UK in junior year for boarding school. Eight years later, Jackson has returned from abroad to take on the role of CEO at his late father's company. When Isabelle and Jackson meet again, there's a war of words, banter and a passionate dislike towards each other. Throw in a high school reunion, some more chaos, and a 'deal' in the mix-one that might just involve a little faking and pretending. It's all fun and games and tit for tat, almost just like in high school, until real feelings become involved...

His hand shifts under my sweater cuff, sliding up to my forearm. ''Tell me you don't feel it.'' I brush my fingers over his collarbones, just above the worn edge of his shirt. Beneath it, I feel the faint shift of muscle, the stutter in his breathing. He kisses me hot and hard. Like a collapse, His hands slide under my clothes to my neck and my hair where they make fists. My scalp prickles. He lets me taste a future with him, to feel it in the thrust of his tongue and bite of his teeth. I'm panting, and aching, and still, we know this won't change anything. Still, he kisses me bruised. π™π™š π™©π™π™žπ™£π™ π™¨ π™‘π™€π™«π™š π™žπ™¨ 𝙨π™ͺπ™›π™›π™šπ™§π™žπ™£π™œ π™¨π™π™š π™©π™π™žπ™£π™ π™¨ π™¨π™π™š π™™π™šπ™¨π™šπ™§π™«π™šπ™¨ π™žπ™© BOOK ONE C O N T A I N S : ❀︎ sexual/mature content ❀︎ violence/abuse/trauma ❀︎ flawed characters (and development) Copyright Β© 2018-present Laurel Montaze (immoralLaurel). Here she is. I can see the slope of her spine through that thin shirt. She's made of angles I ache to smooth with a hand, but I'd use my lips if she asked. I brush her knuckles with mine. Her skin is cold, but she flips her palm for more contact. I lace our fingers. It's enough to make her look at me. As those kaleidoscopic eyes meet mine, I hold my breath. Then she sets her lips just under my jaw. It rips the air from my lungs. It's the softest thing I've ever felt. "What was that for," I breathe. She pulls back, lashes damp, and whispers, "You're the kind of person that should be kissed." 𝙝π™ͺ𝙧𝙩 π™₯π™šπ™€π™₯π™‘π™š 𝙝π™ͺ𝙧𝙩 π™₯π™šπ™€π™₯π™‘π™š BOOK TWO C O N T A I N S : ❀︎ mature content ❀︎ romance & friendship ❀︎ yearning Copyright Β© 2021-present Laurel Montaze (immoralLaurel). Rachel, Al, Lauren, Joe and Sunny grew up together in Queensborough in the late Seventies, solidifying their friendship by forming the Lawrence Street Detective Club. They found a lost pet or two, and even gained brief fame by helping a kid escape his abusive father with the help of Martha Anderson, a kind older woman on their street. They eventually moved away, but never forgot each other, and thirty years later the memorial for Mrs. Anderson reunites them. Rachel, an accountant fired over an embezzlement scandal, divorced, broke and persecuted on social media, would rather not have her old friends know about her troubles, or about her new friend, who may or may not be a symptom of her deteriorating mental condition, but her sudden assignment as executor for Mrs. Anderson's estate forces her to depend on them. Al, infatuated with Rachel since they were children, helps her catalogue the contents of Mrs. Anderson's house but discovers a new mystery requiring the Lawrence Street Detective Club to get back on the case. Lauren, now a private investigator and married to Joe, never lost the knack for the work they did when they were kids, and works to clear Rachel's name while also reconciling with her own feelings for her. Sunny, the lawyer representing Mrs. Anderson's estate, helps Rachel fight back when the man who originally framed her for embezzlement now wants her removed as executor. And when a shocking development draws them all into helping another of his victims, they'll need to rely on each other more than ever before as they risk losing everything they worked for.
