After years of a downward spiral his father, John, used his degree in criminal justice to join the FBI. This meant the Winchester family moved a lot and Sam's brother, Dean, was forced to become a father figure towards him. All of these years of pain subsided when he met Gabe, a mysterious guy who is willing to change what Sam thinks of life.
