A baby's cry pierces the air as the midwife passes the baby to the awaiting hands of the father. Damon happily takes the baby from her hands holding her close to his chest not worried about the blood most likely staining his clothes. As quickly as the moment began it was lost, Damon was pushed out of the small room the baby still in his hands. "Stop! Wait! What's going on?" Damon yells trying to get back into the room. Aufgrund des Todes ihrer Mutter zieht Grace Swan zu ihrem Vater Colin Swan nach Forks wovon sie nur wenig begeistert zu sein scheint, denn dieser Umzug bedeutet nicht nur eine ganz neue Umgebung für sie sondern auch eine neue Schule und viele neue Gesichter. Zu ihrem Glück wohnen ihr Onkel Charlie und ihre Cousine Bella nur ein paar Straßen weiter, somit scheint sie schon einmal eine Bewohnerin in Forks zu kennen die mit ihr zusammen die Highschool besuchen wird. Zuerst scheint Grace's neues Leben in Forks ziemlich langweilig zu sein, doch als sie Bella eines Tages nach 'La Push' begleitet lernt sie den jungen Jacob Black kennen. Dieser scheint überhaupt kein Interesse an ihr zu haben, gefällt es aber wie Grace von ihm schwärmt und lässt sich so auf eine Beziehung mit ihr ein. Es bleibt eine einseitige Liebesbeziehung, jedoch merkt Grace nicht das Jacob ihr gegenüber keinerlei Gefühle hegt. Währenddessen versucht Jacob's bester Freund Embry Call der heimlich Gefühle für Grace hat, ihr die Augen zu öffnen wie blind sie doch vor Liebe ist, womit er sich ziemlich unbeliebt bei ihr macht. Grace scheint nur Augen für Jacob zu haben und merkt nach einer Weile das Jacob und Embry ein gemeinsames Geheimnis teilen.

Alissa Stord ist die Verrücktheit in Person und wohnt zusammen mit ihrem Vater in La Push. Ihre Eltern trennten sich als sie 13 war und ihre Mutter zog dann mit Alissas Bruder weg. In der Schule hatten ihre besten Freunde Jacob, Quil und Embry immer für Aufheiterung gesorgt. Doch irgendwann wurden die Jungs nacheinander krank und fingen an Alissa vollkommen zu ignorieren. Kurz darauf hingen sie alle bei der La Push Gang rum und Alissa musste akzeptieren, dass sie ihre einzigen aber auch besten Freunde wohl für immer verloren hatte. Sie kann nicht anders und versucht mit ihnen abzuschließen.
