Deryn Halloway hates school, like most teenagers. And while you may be reading this and thinking "Hey, isn't this just a very generic summary for a very generic teacher/student romance book," I'm going to tell you a bit about why you should read this book. Don't be fooled by the cheesy, it gets better. Surprise, surprise, there will be gay relationships. There will also be polyamorous relationships. Oh no, drama, but what book can't move forward without that shit? And...well...just read it, okay? I hate writing summaries and I'm pretty shit at it so please at least read the first chapter before tossing this to the depths of hell, yeah?

What can one say about Amani? Amani is fifteen and fourteen years old with two names, two genders, two families, two nationalities, two life histories and two birthdays documented on two birth certificates - plus one certificate of death. (Except, not exactly. You know, on the gender thing. It’s…complicated. Actually, it’s not complicated, it’s just, uh, well, explaining it is odd and unexpected and makes other people sort of go off strange.) But back to Amani. Amani has never had a friend or a playmate, unless you count adults. Amani has an Arabian stallion that no one else ever rides, flies sailplanes and loves cars and Paris fashion. Amani doesn’t ever expect to be in love...but then there have been a lot of things that happened in Amani’s life that were unexpected. Oh, and perhaps this goes without saying: Amani has been carefully prepared for a life that’s almost, but not quite, completely different from the one Amani has to fit into.

"The world will crush you up and spin you round and pick it's teeth with your bones," they paused, and I was still suffocating, nails biting into my paint stained thighs. "But that doesn't mean it's not worth it." I nodded and pretended that I understood. And maybe just for a minute, when the sun hit me right and the wind blew quietly, they weren't quite as batshit crazy as this whole idea; Maybe I tried to understand.
