The cafeteria doors swung open again, and Milana didn't need to look up to know who it was. The loud, overlapping voices, the laughter that was always just a little too loud-that was Max and the guys.
"Move over, ladies," Jason announced, sliding into the seat next to Heaven. "We're here to bless your lunch period with our presence."
Heaven snorted. "Bless? You mean curse."
Max slid into the seat next to Milana-close enough that she could smell his cologne. She kept her eyes on her sandwich. *Stay cool. Stay normal.*
"So, Mil," he said, his voice casual, "how's the quiz recovery going?"
She looked up. He was smiling, that half-smile that made her heart do something annoying in her chest. "Surviving," she said. "Barely."
"That's my favorite thing about you," he said, and she couldn't tell if he was joking. "You're always surviving."
