Dead Horse
( Noun Phrase / idiom )
" I can 't beat a dead horse . "
The act if wasting time and energy on a hopeless cause. Trying to do something impossible, or to continue discussing an issue that has already been decided, resolved, or is no longer relevant.
No one knew Sal was going to kill himself on a random night in April. No one knew he'd even left the house.
No one except Joey.
She had seen him leave, had spoken to him, had took in, what she knew, were his last words, and it made her feel guilty. More guilty than she had ever felt before. The night replayed in her mind, and it kept replaying and replaying every night she laid in bed and stared at her glow-star ceiling.
Joey had promised. She promised him.
Just... keep this a secret between you and me.
And she did. She hadn't told Ravi, she hadn't told anyone. There was no one to tell anyway, she didn't really have any friends. She drowned her sorrows in alcohol, and weed, drugs in general. She tried to forget how she acted out after he died, she tried to forget Max Hastings, his secrets and her own.
The quid pro quo.
Joey had almost completely erased it from her mind. She could almost lay in bed and not feel immense guilt and grief.
But then Pippa Fitz-Amobi showed up, and the girl was more determined than ever to solve the Andie Bell case.
And even more so to change Joey Locksmith for the better.
