Dit verhaal speelt zich af in de tijd van de Bokkenrijders. In dit verhaal is de 24- jarige Elize van Brakel de hoofdpersoon. Ze vertelt over haar "simpele" levendje die misschien niet bijzonder lijkt, volgens de andere burgers in Valkenburg. Maar in huize van Brakel is toch wel wat meer aan de hand dan alleen mishandeling. Elize draagt drie grote geheimen met zich mee die haar leven in gevaar zouden kunnen brengen. "Mijn mond is mijn geweer. Mijn woorden zijn mijn kogels. Ik ben de jager. Jullie de vogels."
