Two years ago, Shredder got ahold of Mikey and almost killed him. Now Shredder is dead, but Mikey is scarred for life. He doesn't laugh anymore, and rarely smiles. He barely even talks. The only time he does talk, is if he's having a panic attack. Raph, Leo, Donnie, Splinter, Casey, and April have given up hope that the old Mikey will ever be back again, until Ellie comes along.
