"Is that a damn dog?" Merle asked Daryl, who had paused to light a smoke stopped, just before the lighter touched the cigarette. Looking towards the house he sees the familiar white and black speckled fur, stained with red. "Son of bitch." He hisses, the lighter and cigarette hitting the ground as he raced to the house. Merle was confused but was fast on his brother's heels, they bust into the house and found it was quiet besides the sound of dishes clattering in the sink and water swishing. They share a look before entering the kitchen, there they spot their sister. Aspen stood at the sink with her back to them, washing dishes as their father sat at the table eating and drinking. Merle stayed in the doorway of the kitchen, watching his younger siblings as Daryl approached their sister like she was a spooked fawn. Daryl kept his voice gentle as he spoke "The hell happened?" She didn't face him, didn't make a sound, but he noticed how she scrubbed harder at the pan, chipping some of the coating. "I shot that damn dog." Daryl Dixon is completely on his own. After the Saviors burn down Alexandria, he thinks that he is the only survivor. Living without the group that he has come to love, has left him as nothing more than a shell of the man he used to be. One day after a brutal fight, he stumbles upon a run-down shack in the woods. As he lay dying on the dirty floor, his life is saved by a complete stranger. These two loners find that living life together is so much better than doing it alone. I haven't written a story in the first person since Broken. It's not as easy as it sounds, but I enjoyed the challenge. This story has taken me months to write and I finished it just days after the Season 8 midseason finale. Any similarities to that episode are pure coincidence. I wrote the chapter (You'll know which one) months before Season8 even started. For anyone that is newly following me or reading my books, I write differently than most. You only start to get chapters once the entire story is written. And it finally is. I hope everyone enjoys Angel.
