The bell above the door didn't just chime tonight; it felt like a warning.
At 3:14 AM, the Starlight Diner was usually a tomb of humming refrigerators and the distant, lonely hiss of the espresso machine. Dove was mid-reach, stretching her aching arms to stack a fresh crate of ceramic mugs, when the heavy glass door swung open. The cold, rain-damp air of the city rushed in, cutting through the smell of old grease and burnt sugar like a blade.
She didn't turn around immediately. She couldn't. A sudden, visceral weight settled in the room, the kind of atmospheric pressure that precedes a massive storm.
"I'll be right with you," she called out, her voice a soft, melodic contrast to the grittiness of the hour. She tucked a loose, dark strand of hair back into her ponytail, wiped her damp palms on her apron, and finally turned.
The breath died in her throat.
