"I despise you. I hate you with every drop of blood running through my veins. I hate hearing your voice. I feel suffocated when I'm near you!" she screamed, her voice raw with rage, her eyes shining with tears.
He stood silently, watching her with an expression that revealed nothing-an unreadable mask that no one had ever been able to break. As if her words were merely pages in a book he was calmly turning.
He stepped closer.
Now only inches away, he looked straight into her trembling eyes. Slowly, he raised his hand to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear, but she turned her face away, shutting her eyes tightly. A tear slid down her cheek. He noticed. His hand froze, then fell back to his side.
He took another step toward her. Instinctively, she stepped back. Again he advanced; again she retreated-until her back met the cold wall. She lowered her gaze, breathing unevenly, while he stood before her, their faces only a breath apart.
Gently, he lifted his hand again and brushed away her tear with his thumb. Her eyes fluttered shut at the touch.
"Ye aankhein toh kuch aur hi kehti hain," he murmured, lifting her chin so she would look at him.
("These eyes tell a very different story.")
"Tum kehti ho ki nafrat hai mujhse..."
("You say you hate me...")
He tucked another loose strand of hair behind her ear, his voice dropping to a quiet certainty.
"Aur main tumhare rag-rag se waqif hoon... khair."
("But I know every part of you... anyway.")
