When the Sleeper discovers an ancient legend promising immortality, known as the Scorn of Immortality-one that requires the youngest of his bloodline to come to him of their own free will-he sets a trap Aru won't be able to ignore. Aiden is taken and hidden deep within the Sleeper's dungeon, left to endure far more than he lets on. After overhearing the Sleeper's true plan, Aiden makes a desperate choice: if Aru never comes looking for him, she'll be safe. His apsara magic allows him to communicate with anyone he wants by his mind. He uses this power to speak with all the Potatoes except Aru. Brynne, being the icon she is, forces Aiden to talk to Aru which he uses as an opportunity to pretend to hate her.He thinks that if he can get her to hate him, she won't come to save him-convinced that breaking her heart is the only way to protect it. But Aru, already drowning in guilt over her father's actions, comes to attempt to save him anyways. She manages to break him out, unknowingly right where the Sleeper wants her to be. After finding out he was being threatened, and after Aru is threatened too, the group hurries to find the murderer--and the search needs to be rushed, after they themselves begin getting death threats.
