Thirteen-year-old Elias Vey is a boy who has always been different - soft-spoken, artistic, sensitive - in a small, rotting town that demands toughness, obedience, and conformity. After a violent family tragedy leaves him orphaned, Elias falls under the "protection" of a revered local figure: a man seen as a philanthropist, a rescuer of "wayward" youth. In reality, he is a predator hiding behind society's desperate need for normalcy.
