Jaiden Mitchell and Zara Kane have hated each other for as long as either of them can remember Not rivalry people mistake for flirting, not some cute childhood competition they eventually grew out of Real fucking hatred The kind built across rival high schools, cheer mats, bloodied knuckles, suspensions, parents getting called, and years of people learning not to stand between them when one finally swings Freshman year at UNC is supposed to be Jaiden's chance to start over, living with her sister, finally having some freedom, and throwing herself into cheer, the one thing she refuses to fuck up and the same sport her mother once built a legacy in at Texas Zara Kane was never supposed to be part of that Then the redhead walks onto Jaiden's fucking mat For the first time in their lives, there is no rival school keeping them apart, no separate teams, no walking away after competition and pretending the other one stops existing Now Zara is everywhere Same campus Same team Same fucking uniform Jaiden already knows Zara better than she should, her habits, her tells, the people she talks to, the exact look she gets before she loses control She tells herself it is because Zara is her enemy Because you should know your enemy Because watching someone is different from wanting them Until beating Zara stops being enough Jaiden wants inside her head, under her skin, everywhere Zara has spent years refusing to let her be, and Zara is about to learn that hatred is a dangerous thing to feed when the person hating you has never known how to want anything halfway Zara thinks walking away means she escaped Jaiden knows better She never escaped a fucking thing Jaiden just hadn't decided it was time yet

"I don't belong to anyone, and I sure as hell don't belong to you" "sweetheart, you've always belonged to me." __________________________________________ For as long as Addison Belmore could remember, she and her best friend, Briar Reid, had been attached at the hip. From playing softball together to falling asleep on the couch while some shitty movie played in the background, they were inseparable. That all changed at the start of freshman year when a party was thrown on Halloween and Addison found Danny Hughes, her boyfriend, and Briar making out on the couch while he was practically fucking her through her clothes. Addison waited days for a text, a call, or even an email. She just wanted anything Briar could give her that could somewhat resemble an apology-but she never sent one. The worst part was that Briar lived right across the street from Addison, yet she still had the absolute audacity to do nothing. After a few weeks of silence, Addison promised herself she'd never talk to Briar again, and that she would become everything Briar ever wanted to be. But promises do change..... __________________________________________ In present time Years had passed, and by the time senior year rolled around, their hatred for each other had become known in the entire school. They only had one more year of high school left together, but surviving it was going to be an absolute nightmare. they're also now captains of the softball team. They were stuck sharing the same dugout, leading the same team, and fighting for the exact same ending. Addison had spent years building herself up to be everything Briar couldn't touch but will her walls crumble? SCARLETT Rule number one, never fall in love with your stepsister, rule number two, definitely and I mean definitely never fall in love with your stepsister who is a diagnosed psychopath. Thankfully I will be able to keep those rules easily since I never loathed anyone more than I loathe Sloane Blackwell. What she did I can never forgive and never forget. SLOANE Obsession is such an interesting feeling, you just get hooked and can't stop fixating on your prey. Too bad for Scarlett Beaumont the prey in question is her. She hates me oh so beautifully too, I know she'll never forgive me, good thing I don't need her to. She will be mine either way, I won't stop until she is, and her hate? That just keeps me warm at night. Let the games begin, shall we?

Sometimes we're not even fully aware of how similar hate and love really are. How closely they sit together, how thin the line is between them. One wrong word, one wrong choice, one moment of fear or anger, and you cross it without even realizing you've done so. That's how it had alwags been with Casey Miller and Olivia Lordan. They didn't hate each other for no reason. There were reasons, plenty of them, actually. Old wounds that never healed right, memories that calcified instead of fading, words spoken too young and carried for too long. But were those reasons valid enough? That was the question no one ever asked out loud. Because validity is subjective. Pain doesn't measure itself against intent. Trauma doesn't care how old you were, or what you meant to do. It just exists, heavy and unrelenting, shaping you whether you want it to or not. Everyone has flaws. Everyone has demons they fight in private. Some people turn inward and rot quietly. Some people explode. Some people run. Some people stay and harden. None of it is clean, and none of it is fair. And maybe that was the cruelest part for them. Not the hate. Not the anger. Not even the silence. But the fact that, once upon a time, it had been love, or something dangerously close to it, and that was what made everything else hurt so much more.
