Jaehaera Targaryen was supposed to die-at the age of ten, and just like her mother, impaled upon the iron spikes of Maegor's Holdfast. But as fate, or perhaps the gods, would have it, she survived. Or at least, she survived long enough to leave her mark on the court, its lords and ladies, her family, and her husband.
She survived long enough to give her quiet, grieving king a son and heir-a piece of her to remain at his side long after she was gone. A child who bore her eyes and her face. A child who would remind Aegon III of the queen he had once resented, grown to love, and ultimately lost.
The mournful king would come to believe the price too high. Whispers in the court said he wished the queen had lived, and not the boy. But none could change the fact: she was dead, and year by year, the king seemed to fade-chasing the ghost of the girl who had haunted his childhood and ruled his heart.
When a wish made by a son-Daeron Targaryen, the Young Dragon-asks only that his father might have known happiness, he and figures of legend, history, and blood are summoned to bear witness to the past, the present, and what might have been.
A tale of sorrow, survival, and a love that was never simple, but always real.
