The Three Musketeers (French: Les Trois Mousquetaires) is a novel by Alexandre Dumas, which recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to travel to Paris, to join the Musketeers of the Guard. D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those are his friends Athos, Porthos and Aramis, inseparable friends who live by the motto "all for one, one for all" ("tous pour un, un pour tous").

The novel depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralized by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same time period. It follows the lives of several protagonists through these events. The most notable are Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton. Darnay is a former French aristocrat who falls victim to the indiscriminate wrath of the revolution despite his virtuous nature, and Carton is a dissipated English barrister who endeavors to redeem his ill-spent life out of his unrequited love for Darnay's wife. I'm not good at descriptions, so here's the prologue: I deserve a donut. I really do. Here I am, quite selflessly, if may add, sitting in a jail cell after doing NOTHING wrong. Sure, harboring a fugitive, resisting arrest, tampering with a crime scene- those could be looked upon as arrest-worthy offenses, but... I had a really good reason. And I was about to have PROOF regarding the validity of that reason when, well, I'll get to that. But for the moment I was here, in this thick-aired British jail, very deserving of a donut. I heard a thick cough closeby and covered my face with my sleeve. Ugh, just think of all the diseases floating around here. Oh, please God, don't let that random cougher have Tuberculosis. Well, I guess it's about that time I tell you how a bright, thoughtful med student from the states like me got herself in this mess of a conspiracy filled with bombs, double agents, twins, and some accents that may or may not have clouded my judgement. ALL PEOPLE SEEING THIS PLEEEEEAAAASSSE READ This is my first Wattpad story and my first attempt on a full story, so PLEASE comment, critique, and help me become a better writer!
