Emmie Cano has been playing for USC for the past three years. She is not only the best player on the team but one of the best players in the country. She has an average point of 22 per game, and almost no one can guard her. That is, except for her competition, Paige Bueckers. Paige Bueckers is slightly above her with a 23-per-game average, securing her as the #1 spot as the best women's college basketball player. Emmie and Paige have been switching between the #1 and #2 spots for the past 3 years, with Emmie having the spot her freshman year. Everyone knows them as the biggest rivals in women's college basketball. Every game between USC v. UCONN becomes intense, with the highest watched and populated game of the entire season, with fans dying to see the interactions and rivalry between Emmie and Paige. The tension is high, and the thought of Paige makes Emmie's blood boil. While USC has treated her well in the past, Emmie was shocked to find an offer from UCONN's coach in her phone for her incoming senior year. Her first instinct was to ignore it and laugh, but then she thought. UCONN was closer to her family, given they live in NYC. Emmie, with her dad in a coma back home, time zones, being unable to see her family, and being on the opposite side of the world all took a toll on Emmie. Not only was UCONN more practical, but it was her dream since she was in 8th grade. She was not offered a spot at UCONN in the freshman recruitment process, and USC became her best offer. Although the thought of being on the same team as Paige enraged her, she knew Paige could not let her stop her. It was a challenging choice to make. USC felt like home for Emmie. From the warm weather to the team to her friends, she felt complete. Yet basketball is her life, and she knew UCONN could increase her skill and give her a better experience as a player and her life. So, after talking to UCONN's coach, her decision became clear. Emmie is going to UCONN.

Paige Bueckers is the star of UCONN's Women's Basketball team, but even an athlete of her status has to blow off steam somehow... On a very different part of the campus is UCONN journalism student Jovie Evans, who is not an athlete at all. In fact, she couldn't care less about sports. When the two meet in a bar and agree that they could use the outlet of each other sparks fly, but being an athlete with a secret isn't easy and being stuck with Paige Bueckers is even harder. This is a romance/mature story. *There is no coming out plot line to this story because I think queer spaces should be for queer people existing and not solely defined by justifying their existence. * Paige Bueckers is used as inspiration for her character here purely in likeness and stature as a basketball player, everything else about her is made up and imagined for this story, it is in no shape or form a reflection of her behaviour or beliefs. Some other teammates are mentioned by name but used solely for their names and nothing else.

To raise the funds necessary to repair their devastated locker room, the UConn Huskies basketball team organizes a grand masquerade ball. While Azzi is swept up in the romance of the idea, Paige harbors nothing but disdain for the event and vows to boycott it entirely. Yet, driven by a restless curiosity, Paige finds herself slipping into the gala under the shroud of a disguise. There, shielded by the anonymity of their masks and oblivious to the identity of the person before them, Paige and Azzi fall deeply for one another. Haunted by the magic of that night and unable to forget her mysterious encounter, Azzi begins a desperate quest to track her down. The irony, however, is cruel: she hasn't just fallen for the masked stranger, but has also begun to develop profound feelings for the real Paige... ------------------------------

For two weeks, the UConn team trades practices and packed arenas for a beach house on the coast. Late-night swims, bonfires, sandy floors, music playing through open windows - it's supposed to be easy. Simple. But nothing has ever been simple between Paige and Azzi. Paige has spent way too long pretending her feelings are harmless, temporary, something she can keep hidden behind teasing smiles and lingering glances. Azzi tries to act unaffected, pushing everything down every time her heart starts getting too loud. Because if they admit what's really there, it changes everything. And somewhere between midnight talks, saltwater air, jealousy, almost-confessions, and the kind of summer that feels too perfect to last, the line between friendship and something more starts to disappear.

A realistic take on Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd - built around real moments, real teammates, and the emotional gray areas no one ever talks about. This fanfic follows them during Paige's senior year and Azzi's junior year at UConn, where the lines between best friends and something more have always been blurred. With old feelings resurfacing and new questions rising, Paige and Azzi find themselves in a quiet crisis - are they really just friends... or have they never been? This is my version of how I believe their story unfolded - rooted in truth, subtlety, and the moments in between. All characters are portrayed with how I perceive them in real life, and this story aims to stay grounded in who they are as athletes, teammates, and people. It's not overly dramatized - just my version of what might have been happening in the quiet moments no one else saw.
