In the 1850's in Nueva Granada (Spanish South America), Maria, a teenage girl, is in love with a young man who grew up with her. He is just back from school and their romance starts right away. They are distant cousins, but his parents (who raised her, after she was orphaned) feared that she has inherited a terrible and incurable disease from her mother. Only the translation is mine. The story is in the public domain in its original Spanish version. It was written by Jorge Isaacs, an influential Colombian writer.
