He pointed his finger at her so she would understand how important this was. "You need to learn Occlumency. If you're captured, I'm dead." She stared back at him defiantly. "We both are." He couldn't argue with that. She tossed his wand to the floor and Disapparated with a crack.

Hermione felt the pounding in her ears again. She would see him for the first time since the Great Hall, gaunt and stricken at the Slytherin table with his mother clutching his arm. She hadn't meant to look for him. Not in the corridors, not beneath the white sheets of the fallen, not on the way to the Chamber of Secrets with Ron, but she was a stupid girl.

Malfoy knocks into Granger. Granger snarls. Malfoy mocks. Granger retorts. The end. Except... Something in his chest cracked open. His limbs moved before his pride could catch up. He dropped to one knee beside her and began to collect the books. Hermione blinked, her fingers pausing on the spine of her Arithmancy notes. Her eyes darted to his face, confused. "You're actually helping?" she muttered, suspiciously. Draco didn't look at her. He picked up the thickest book, brushing some dust from the edge. His fingers trembled. And then, voice rough, soft-like it had scraped itself raw before speaking-he said: "I-I'm sorry." Hermione froze completely. What? Draco cleared his throat, handed her the book, and added, voice faltering just enough to betray him: "I didn't mean to, I wasn't paying attention-sorry, mudblood." When they both meet up in the same time, things get fun.
