Of course, he doesn't actually like her; it's just a big prank towards Ragatha, but the longer it goes on, the harder it becomes to remember it's a joke. Jax grinned "Every time she looks at me, you stiffen like your plastic heart's about to crack. You hate that she might actually like me more.." he sneered. Ragatha scoffed, "You don't deserve her! You hurt everyone who gets close, but Pomni isn't a toy, Jax!" He shot a glare at her, "You think just because YOU play nice, you win her heart by default?? That's not how it works." he snapped. Her eyes narrowed at him, "Were you... spying?" she inquired. "Spying? Nah. Just enjoying the show. You and Pomni, it's like watching a rom-com," a smirk formed on his face "She was thanking me, Jax. For being supportive. Something you wouldn't understand" "Supportive? Please! You're clinging to her, it's obsession and Pomni is just too oblivious to notice," he argued. "Every time she smiles at me, your whole act cracks. You think I don't see it?" "She doesn't even know who you really are, Ragatha! Behind all that fake kindness, you're just as broken as the rest of us.." Jax shot back, turning away. "And you think you know her better? All you do is confuse her. You tease her, push her away, then vanish. She doesn't want that, she wants to be cared for," Ragathas tone raising. Jax growled, "You mean she wants you? That's cute, her eyes lit up when I talked to her yesterday. You saw it." "That doesn't mean anything. She trusts me. She opens up to me. You make her anxious because you toy with her." "I know I do, but at least I make her feel. Something real. Not this fake, safe, sterilized version of affection you're giving her" "You really think pain is better than peace??" She shot back. Jax turned to face her again, "I'd burn this place down if it meant she'd look at me the way she looks at you," he replied flatly. "You want her to love you, Jax... but you're so afraid she might that you ruin it before she has the chance...you push her away, and she runs to me" "And you're so desperate to be loved that you smother her with affection and pretend it's love."

When they are arguing, instead of lunging at Jax, Pomni looses it and tries to end it. She didn't think reaching a game over with the intention of it being permanent would lead to anything. Expect it does. Jax learns pretending not to care doesn't mean it's true, and that the circus doesn't function as he'd convinced himself it does. - Cross-posted on AO3 Updates once a week

Jax is definitely not beating himself up after his argument with Pomni. Why would he, when he's already told her and himself he doesn't care about anyone in the circus? He's determined to keep his actual feelings about the circus members behind the door of his bedroom, all contained to a singular corkboard on his wall. Pomni is determined to continue being friends with Jax, even after their spat, because she knows he was lying his way through it. She's respecting his space as best as she can, until him ignoring her makes her break entirely.
