حين صادفنا، أنا وصديقي المقرّب و حبيبه الوحش الأرجواني الضخم، معسكرًا محصّنًا للغزاة وسط الأراضي المهجورة التي تعجّ بالوحوش، لم نظن أن الأمر سيتجاوز إيصال رسالة عابرة. لكن تلك الوقفة العابرة تحوّلت إلى مهمّة يائسة: إنقاذ قائد المعسكر المفقود من سجنٍ جحيمي يُرغَم فيه على القتال ضد الوحوش و البشر على حدّ سواء. و أنا أعرف ذاك المكان جيدًا... فقد كنت فيه سابقًا. المشكلة؟ يجب أن أقطع هذه الرحلة برفقة أكثر شخصٍ حادّ الطباع عرفته، رجلٍ نصفه وحش، و نصفه جليد. كرهني من النظرة الأولى، الا أن قلبي يقول إنه لا يكرهني أنا... بل يكره ذاته. هو واقع في حبّ غازٍ لا يبادله الشعور، و يبدو أنه عازم على صبّ جراحه كلّها عليّ. لكنني لن أردّ على لذعه بالكراهية، و لن أنساق وراء سخريته الجارحة. و سأحاول، قدر استطاعتي، ألا أنجذب إلى جماله الآسر، حتى و هو يرمقني بتلك النظرة الغاضبة. و مع كلّ يوم يمضي، أراه يتكشف لي أكثر. أدرك أن غضبه ليس سوى قناع، و أن العزلة التي اختارها تحرس قلبًا نزف كثيرًا. هناك أسرار خلف ذلك الجدار، أسرار لو عرفتها... قد أفعل المستحيل لأحرّره منها، حتى لو أخبرني هو نفسه... بأنه لا يستحق الخلاص."
