This story is based on themes portrayed in the Netflix original Stranger Things. I do not own any rights to this adaptation nor the character of Mike Wheeler. This is my own original work based on my own interpretation of this character.

Hawkins has monsters. Santana has a gun. And Steve Harrington won't let her fight alone.

I wasn't supposed to be in the story. Not the kind with monsters, gates, or government labs. "This little fairy freak," he said, gesturing toward me like I was something stuck to his shoe. "Always floating around in her weird outfits, acting all sweet and innocent-like she doesn't watch people making out from bathroom cracks like a total psycho." I froze. The air left my lungs. "Steve," Nancy whispered sharply beside him, "it was the girl's bathroom." But he wasn't listening. "She's always staring," he continued. "Like we're all in some sad little movie she made up in her head. Always acting like she's not dying for attention." I was just the girl with too-soft sweaters and panic attacks. The one who watched people fall in love from the sidelines. The one who crushed silently on Steve Harrington while he kissed other girls in haunted high school bathrooms. Then Will Byers went missing. And suddenly I was helping Nancy reload a shotgun. Hiding from the Demogorgon on rooftops. Whispering to Dustin like I was his big sister. Running. Fighting. Surviving. And somewhere in between the broken cameras, the Halloween parties, the Upside Down... Steve started looking at me like I was in the story too. Justin Henderson had always had a thing for photography. She would steal her father's camera and use it to take pictures of leaves, butterflies, her mother reading a newspaper on the couch with her cat Mews, her baby brother playing with his toys, a rock that was sat prettily. She enjoyed the way that everything in photos were real. True, natural beauty, all captured in just a single click. Something she never expected was to make it her job, working at the Hawkins' Post as Jonathan Byers' co-lead of photography was about as good a job as she could ask for. She definitely got a lot more respect than the other girls at the post. But, more importantly to her, she got to take pictures of the beautiful things, the real things. What she didn't expect, was for the real things to become so dangerous. Still beautiful in her eyes, but deadly. Why, oh why, did she listen to Nancy Wheeler about some stupid rat problem?
