The first season of The O.C. follows the lives of the Cohen, Cooper, and Nichol families when a troubled teen from the wrong side of the tracks, Ryan Atwood, is thrust into the wealthy, harbor-front community of Southern California's Orange County. Taken in by a lawyer and his family, Ryan winds up in the midst of snarky, wealthy high schoolers and their sun-drenched angst.
Into this world comes Valeria Vega-Cohen, a Mexican-American teen whose life had been shaped by tragedy and responsibility. Born and raised in Riverside, Valeria grew up in a home with her mother, Marisol Vega, and in a home overshadowed by her father, Miguel Morales, whose struggles with alcohol and drugs made life unstable and frightening. From a young age, Valeria had to care for both her parents. Her mother was killed in a car accident, a loss that left her with both grief and the memories of a love she could never forget.
Before her death, Marisol made one final, selfless request: that her daughter be placed in the care of Sandy and Kirsten Cohen. Valeria's maternal uncle, Ricardo Vega, and her protective aunt, Carmen Vega, honored her sister's wishes, arranging for Valeria's adoption and visiting often to ensure she was safe, loved, and guided through her new life in Newport.
Now part of the Cohen household, Valeria navigates the complexities of wealth, friendship, and first love while carrying the weight of her past. Her resilience, intelligence, and quiet strength draw people to her-most notably Ryan Atwood, whose own troubled past mirrors hers in unexpected ways. With the support of the Cohens, her extended family, and her own inner courage, Valeria begins to heal, forge her identity, and find a place in the sun-drenched, drama-filled world of Orange County.
