"How can you do this, Maa?" Surya's voice thundered through the house, sharp and furious. "She is Aditi's best friend-almost ten years younger than me! How could you even think I would agree to this marriage? She is still a child herself-how can she handle my kids, my responsibilities, my life?"
Inside, his mother stepped forward, her voice calm but firm. "Surya... you are judging without truly knowing her. She is a good woman, beta. She always takes care of everyone around her. You don't see her the way I do. If you did... if you really knew her, you would fall in love with her."
I stood outside the room, pressing my hands to the wall, trembling. Her words pierced me deeper than his anger. She saw me. She believed in me. But he... he laughed bitterly.
"Fall in love?" Surya snapped. "Caring for people doesn't make a life partner. She's too young, too naïve-she doesn't belong in my world."
His mother sighed softly, heavy with sorrow. "Sometimes, beta, we are blind to the light before us. You call her naïve, but I call her strong. One day, you may realize the truth too late-that the love you needed most was always beside you."
Her words lingered in the air, fragile yet unyielding. I pressed my forehead to the wall, tears slipping down my cheeks. My heart ached at his rejection, yet a flicker of hope warmed me, the only light in my dark despair.
Why am I so unloved? I wondered, my chest tightening. I had loved him silently, fiercely, my whole life. Yet he could not see it. My love was invisible to him, though aunty had already seen its depth.
Little did either of us know, this was only the beginning of our journey-not with acceptance, but with rejection, anger, and hidden tears. And if a beginning could burn this painfully, what would destiny demand of us before letting our hearts meet?
