Als Feanor Alqualonde angreift, flüchtet die Gemalin des Königs der Teleri, Himluin, mit ihrem neugeborenen Sohn und einigen anderen Teleri auf einem Schiff Richtung Mittelerde. Sie nennt ihren Sohn Seregnen - Blutwasser- und schwört Rache an den Noldor. Als sie den Boden Beleriands betritt, übergibt man ihr eine alte Prophezeihung, die besagt, dass ein Prinz der Teleri eines Tages mächtige Verbündete finden und eine Flotte von Schiffen bauen würde, die so mächtig wären, dass sie jeder Gefahr zu trotzen im Stande sein. Himluin ist sich sicher: Seregnen wird die Prophezeihung erfüllen und Rache an den Noldor üben, ob er nun will oder nicht. Im Osten versucht auch Morgoth eine mächtige Streitmacht aufzubauen. Im Zuge seines vor den Valar verborgenen Plans "zweite Nacht" züchtet er in seiner grauenhaften Festung Angband eine neue Generation dunkler Maiar, die den drohenen Krieg für ihn entscheiden sollen, doch nicht alle dieser lebenden Waffen sind so loyal, wie er sich erhofft...
