He runs a bloody hand through his hair, getting the crimson liquid everywhere - on his face, in his now-damp, dark hair, staining his pale skin...there isn't a spot on him that hasn't been tarnished by the ruining substance.
And when he looks up to smile at me again, still on his knees at my feet, I quite literally stop breathing.
His next words don't help, his voice low and dangerous, as if murmuring a prayer.

Verena Ebonmere was never meant to stand out. Her magic was bound, her family tried to forget her, and even at Hogwarts she's just another face in the crowd - until a mark blooms against her skin, thorn-shaped and burning with power she doesn't understand.
Now everyone seems to want something from her: a professor whose charm hides something far more dangerous, a boy whose visions of rebellion could consume them both, and a man whose gentle smile conceals secrets older than the school itself.
Pulled between desire, loyalty, and the lure of her own unraveling power, Verena must decide whether she's the prey everyone expects her to be... or the crown they never saw coming.
