"You can be such a flirt sometimes, my king," I said, averting my gaze and focusing on the delicate dance of steam rising from my own cup of tea. The words slipped out before I could think.
He chuckled, and I felt a warmth spread through me that had nothing to do with the warm beverage in my hands. "And what makes you say that, my dear?" His tone was light, but the intensity of his gaze belied the depth of his feelings.
I looked back at him, my cheeks still flushed. "You know what I mean," I said with a small smile, trying to keep my voice light. "The way you look at me sometimes, the things you say... It's like you're playing with fire."
"You know," Warrick said, a hint of amusement in his voice as he took a bite of the egg, "no one else would dare to call me flirt without fearing for their head."
To anyone else, the king's words might have sounded like a veiled threat, a reminder of his absolute power and the fate that could befall them for such impertinence. But I can hear the playful lilt in his tone. He was teasing me.
"Should I be fear to lose mine then?" I teased back.
Warrick's smile grew wider, his eyes gleaming with mischief. He reached out to gently trace my jaw with his thumb, sending shiver down my spine.
"You, my dear," he said, his voice a gentle rumble, "are the most precious thing in my empire." His eyes searched mine, the intensity of his gaze leaving no room for doubt. "I would rather lose my crown than risk losing you."
