They stood outside the terminal, the sun beating down mercilessly, and he still hadn't gone inside.
Instead, he stepped closer, close enough that she had to tilt her head back to look at him, close enough that the heat between them felt like more than just the weather.
"Do you hate me now?" His voice was quiet, careful.
She shook her head.
"Will you block me?"
Another shake.
"Delete my number?"
Another shake.
"Stop picking up my calls? Leave me on seen? Give me the silent treatment?"
She kept shaking her head, and he kept searching her face like he was trying to read something written in a language he'd forgotten.
"I'm still not convinced," he said finally, and there was something almost desperate in his tone. "So I'm warning you now, I will personally sue every Connor in the world if you even think about putting him on that list."
She almost smiled. Almost. "My list only has four spots. They're all full. I'm closed for business."
He stared at her. Just stared with that intensity that made her want to look anywhere else, at the taxis pulling up, at the travelers rushing past, at literally anything that wasn't his eyes trying to pull the truth out of her.
Finally, she looked away. She couldn't help it.
"I'm leaving now," he said quietly. "At least say something that'll make me feel good about it."
She looked back at him, at his stupid hopeful face, at the way he was still standing too close, at the fact that he'd made her drive him here just so he could torture them both with this goodbye.
"Asshole," she said.
And he laughed.
