Rights and responsibilities is the 2014 theme of National History Day Contest, a broad topic. And I chose to write a just as broad topic of human rights. What are human rights? Is it to prove we're human? Prove that we're humans are right? Or to tell us apart from aliens? Though, now that I think of it, all extraterrestrial beings should have rights as well, but let's just have the Men in Black deal with that- But before getting off of topic, let's focus back on this. As you read about this, think about these questions (not the alien one, unless you want to). Think about what it takes to not only be human, to act like one too. And after you read this, think to yourself. Do you have the right to be human? This essay won first place for the 2014 National History Day essay contest in California.

She couldn't really explain how she came upon the planet called Earth, as she couldn't really explain anything. She woke up in the woods with no memory of how she got there. She couldn't even remember a detail about herself, not even her own name. Unfortunately for the teenage girl, her memory loss was not a good enough answer for the people she found herself surrounded by. The Grounders of Earth took the stranger hostage, demanding to know how she came to the planet, with only small mutters of her falling from the sky. She was left without answers, which only angered the people around her which led her through a long year of tortuous interrogations that left her barely alive. It wasn't until her one friend among the Grounders helped her free herself, allowing her to escape from her captivity. Left alone in the woods, barely alive after her latest beating, she ran through the woods in the hopes of the Grounders not being able to find her again, knowing they would surely kill her. Finding herself lost in the woods, and barely able to walk, she found herself surrounded by a group of new people, and by even more surprise than learning the Grounders weren't the only people out there, she learns that they know who she is. A comic apocalyptic sci-fi romp. The zombie apocalypse has come and gone, the world has ended, humanity has crumbled... Nobody told the aliens. Alien brains have some interesting side effects on the ravenous undead. Just ask zombie Li, who wakes up after a quick bite. The world is a wasteland, she's a walking corpse, and her 'snack' melted into a noxious puddle of goo. It's not her day. Determined to figure out what the hell happened to her world, Li hits the road, seeking others like herself. The end of the world brings strange company, and stranger enemies. Struggling to wrap her head around being a zombie and already Li's existence is in danger thanks to impending alien invasion. It's going to take more than a handful of quirky zombies to stop them. She's going to need some serious fire power, like the remnants of the human race. If she can find them. #7 in Science Fiction on 12/3/15 ***Second Place for Science Fiction in Best Fiction Competition*** ***Contains a sprinkling of strong language and zombie violence. No aliens or zombies were harmed in the making of this novel. Recommended for ages 15 and up.***

I was never meant to leave that room. I had spent my whole life in there, imagining what it was like on the outside. I looked forward to the day when I would finally be allowed to leave. But that day was never supposed to come. Until James decided to keep his promise. He had always been there, on the other side of the glass. Waiting. The experiment wasn't over. He was still waiting for me to change. But I didn't change. Not until that night. It was dark, and there was rain. The sound of the car engine was loud, but the crash was louder. In the crash, I became something different. I changed. But not for James. This new part of me emerged for one reason; to save her. In which there is a debate between an optimist and a pessimist. If you don't know what either means, don't be embarrassed. An optimist always thinks that the world is full of hope. The pessimist will just shake his head and say, "Nope". So do you think it's right to believe everything is great every day? Or see that everything is more worse than the next in every single way? A poem submitted for the Everything is Awesome Scholarship Slam 2015.
