In a town of mist and evergreen,
She walks with grace - humble, unseen.
Mary Julia Stacy, preacher's child,
With eyes like hymns and a heart so mild.
She speaks in psalms, wears heaven's light,
While Jasper Hale, born of night,
Feels his silence crack and stir -
A ghost undone by faith in her.
One walks in grace, the other in shame,
Yet somehow, softly, she knows his name.
And in her presence, still and true,
A soldier scarred begins anew.
