Magic was a taboo. Something that was frowned upon and wasn't something you go around flaunting or bragging about. That didn't stop magic from being used, of course.... So this is set in a kind of parallel universe where magic isn't a common practice and most of the time the user is shamed for it. In place of magic advancing, technology is more advanced.
