The following story takes place in the DanMachi universe during a time before the Gods and Goddesses descended heaven. Orario is still the booming capital of the nations, and the Tower of Babel still exists. People worshipped the Gods and pledged their devotion to deities, but no familias were formed in their name; instead, formal and informal adventure groups, as well as formal and informal solo adventurers. Formal groups were registered with the guild, and the guild oversaw the current day runnings of the city. ​ Formal groups and formal solo adventures registered with the guild, and levels and stats were recorded by license and status cards, and specialized status mages used status crystals to read and measure progression. ​ As a form of social control for the people of this nation, a faction known as the Oathkeepers was institutionalized as peacekeepers and protectors of the people. ​
